03. Vista Points: Navigating Life 3.0 Like Lewis & Clark

Navigating Life 3.0 is a lot like signing on as a member of Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery — the expedition that launched from the last outpost of "civilization," St. Louis, in 1804. The mission: explore, discover, and map uncharted territory, report back findings, and, oh yes, make it home safely to loved ones and accolades.

If you were deciding to join a grand adventure like that, you'd probably ask some questions first. Do I trust these leaders? How strong and skilled are my fellow explorers? How well do our guides know this uncharted territory? Do we have good equipment and plenty of supplies? (FYI...here's a real question at Captain Clark's first orientation meeting: "How many barrels of whiskey will we be carrying?")

I expect you want similar particulars about our own adventure through Life 3.0 — particulars that ensure it turns out not just "good," but very good, for you and your household. I can't promise barrels of whiskey. But having been "out there" through my own seasons of discovering and testing, I've got things worth reporting back — things that will aid your navigation and, ultimately, land you at "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Five "vista points" mark the route: SOUL, ADVENTURE, LEGACY, TRANSFORMATION, and YOU & YOUR HOUSE. You know the kind of vista point I mean — where you pull off the road, stop the car, stretch a little, and something bigger than you grabs your full attention. It slips past all your thoughts and desires and, for a moment, makes you aware of your place in the grander scheme of things.

Vista points like these matter enormously for those of us in Life 3.0, if we want to actually experience what it means to be a flourishing human and a servant of the common good. Why? Because no generational cohort in history has held so much time, talent, and treasure to steward well — highly educated, still with "gas in the tank," with real means to shape the future. Just in cold financial terms: roughly $70 trillion is set to transfer into the hands of our children and grandchildren over the coming years.

That's a big responsibility. It's the reason this playbook exists. I want to do it right myself — and I'm inviting you to come along. Let's do something good together with the time we have left.

Oh — and don't worry. There will be potty breaks on this trip.
